Solar Decathlon at the TU-Darmstadt
The Solar Decathlon is an international university competition started in 2002 on the initiative of the United States Department of Energy.
Welcome at Cubity
In August 2013, the architecture department at the TU Darmstadt was invited to Versailles by the organizers of the Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 to develop and build a future-oriented housing cluster for students. The Solar Decathlon is an international student competition for plus-energy houses that took place between June 27th and July 14th 2014 in the palace gardens at Versailles.
The event was organized by the Republic of France, the U.S. Department of Energy and the construction industry, who planned a solar village with twenty-three individual sixteen by sixteen meter housing clusters for the thirty-person teams, in addition to the twenty-three competition buildings and the accompanying infrastructure and event pavilions. The goal was to provide housing opportunities on the Solar Decathlon Campus for all participating teams during the competition and the construction and dismantling phases of their solar houses.
The Energy-Plus and Modular Future Student Living CUBITY documented here was successfully presented internationally as a model project at the Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 by the student team from the TU Darmstadt. About 500 Solar Decathletes from around the world and around 150,000 visitors took part in the event in France.
